THE ELEPHANT PROTECTION ACT - ONTARIO

WHAT IS THE ELEPHANT PROTECTION ACT?

The Elephant Protection Act is a Bill that, if passed, would restrict the use of bullhooks, electric prods and other tools, and the use of restraints (e.g., chains, tethers), in elephant management, training and handling.

WHY AN ELEPHANT PROTECTION ACT NOW?

Why not? It doesn’t matter when a new animal protection law is proposed, there are always people who say there are more important things to do. And the animal use industries that will be affected almost always add that new laws are intrusive and unnecessary.

While some people consider defending the defenseless to be a trivial concern, most do not. In fact, the majority of Ontarians believe animal protection is important and they support measures to protect animals from neglect and abuse.

Several other jurisdictions have passed laws, similar to The Elephant Protection Act, to deal with the abuse and neglect of elephants and it’s time for Ontario to do the same. The Elephant Protection Act is an easy, low cost measure that will help end archaic management practices (the use of the bullhook, other devices and leg restraints) that often result in the abuse and neglect of elephants.
