Professionals from Edmonton Catholic and Public schools have added their names to a letter to be delivered to the Mayor and City Council, requesting that they take immediate action to safeguard Lucy’s health.
The Valley Zoo claims to be a center of education and conservation. Consequently, teachers with student groups have become regular visitors and an important part of the zoo’s annual attendance. However, many teachers have become disillusioned with the conditions at the zoo—particularly with Lucy’s situation—and agree it is time for an independent assessment of her health and a move to a sanctuary in a warmer climate.
In the words of one teacher, “What a terrible situation for Lucy. As a matter of fact, we went on a field trip to the zoo and I could not look at Lucy. I was very sad and distressed to see her in her condition.”
There is no question that the Edmonton Valley Zoo is inappropriate for elephants. These animals are adapted to a semi-tropical climate and vast spaces that allow them to roam freely. As well, the report by Dr. Debi Zimmermann D.V.M., One Veterinarian’s Search for the Truth in the “Lucy the Elephant Debate”, raises doubts about the competence of Lucy’s health care team.
For example: “Treatment for her (Lucy’s) captivity-induced health issues of arthritis, chronic intermittent infections, and obesity are ineffective. As well, they (Valley Zoo) do not have the expertise onboard to deal with her chronic respiratory disease, and her extremely painful impacted tooth, effectively.”
The letter outlines many of the problems associated with Lucy’s situation at the Valley Zoo, including inadequate space and unresolved health problems. In addition, it highlights aspects of the natural lifestyles of elephants in contrast to Lucy’s impoverished life.
“I have seen firsthand some elephants in the wild. Lucy’s home at the Valley Zoo is so sad,” added another teacher.
