A POLAR BEAR IN MEXICO?

A grade 2 unit on animal adaptations

  • Experiment with blubber and ice water to find out how polar bears stay warm
  • Check out how polar bears feet are adapted for ice and snow
  • Investigate a polar bear's skull and teeth, and find out how it hunts
  • See if you can jump as far as a polar bear can when it pounces on its prey
  • Make some predictions about how far polar bears travel in one day or one year, and how far they can swim without stopping
  • Put it all together and find out why polar bears are ill-suited to a life in captivity
  • Discover why Yupi the polar bear is adapted to a life in the frozen arctic, not a life in a barren concrete enclosure in the tropical sun

  • Make some predictions about how far a killer whale can swim in one day, and how deep they can dive
  • Put it all together and find out why killer whales are ill-suited to a life in captivity
  • Meet Corky, the longest held captive killer whale in all history and compare his captive habitat with an ocean habitat
  • Best of all, find out what you can do to help Corky!
