Keep it Wild! Humane Education Workshops

An exciting combination of science, compassion and action, each half-day workshop meets specific expectations of the Ontario Science and Technology Curriculum. Through hands-on scientific investigation, interactive games and engaging activities, students will discover how the health, behaviour and well-being of wild animals in affected by their environment. And best of all, they'll learn how they can take action and make a difference in the lives of all animals.
A POLAR BEAR IN MEXICO?
A grade 2 unit on animal adaptations
- Discover how polar bears are superbly adpated for life in a bitterly cold world
- Experiment with blubber and ice water to find out how polar bears stay warm
- Check out how polar bears feet are adapted for ice and snow
- Investigate a polar bear's skull and teeth, and find out how it hunts
- See if you can jump as far as a polar bear can when it pounces on its prey
- Make some predictions about how far polar bears travel in one day or one year, and how far they can swim without stopping
- Put it all together and find out why polar bears are ill-suited to a life in captivity
- Discover why Yupi the polar bear is adapted to a life in the frozen arctic, not a life in a barren concrete enclosure in the tropical sun
- Best of all, find out what you can do to help Yupi!
A whale in a swimming pool?
A grade 4 unit on habitats and food chains
- Find out what a killer whale's ocean habitat is really like - it's a lot more than just salty water!
- Play Krill: A Whale of a Game and discover what food chains exist in the Antarctic Ocean
- Listen to the sounds a killer whale makes to communicate with its own pod and find out how scientists study these calls
- Discover how whales "see" in the ocean, using echolocation. Find out if you can catch your prey by listening to echos
- Make some predictions about how far a killer whale can swim in one day, and how deep they can dive
- Put it all together and find out why killer whales are ill-suited to a life in captivity
- Meet Corky, the longest held captive killer whale in all history and compare his captive habitat with an ocean habitat
- Best of all, find out what you can do to help Corky!
