Zoocheck applauds closing of stingray exhibit

A watchdog group says the Calgary Zoo is making the right call to close its stingray exhibit, but is wondering why it didn't happen sooner.

The exhibit opened last Febraury and gained national headlines when 41 rays died last year, due to a lack of dissolved oxygen in the water.

Zoocheck tells CTV they think staff realized they didn't have the expertise for the animals and it should have been closed down a year ago.

The group says the zoo shouldn't bring in new animals to replace the rays.

A zoo spokeperson says the exhibit was always meant to be temporary and they weren't willing to invest more money to change aquatic species in the tank.

The zoo is working on finding the dozen rays a new home.
